Sat, January 27, 2018 Women in Engineering, Science and Technology Symposium
Women in Engineering, Science and Technology Symposium

While women make up about half of the world’s population, they form less than a quarter of the world's workforce in engineering, science, and technology fields and the number is in decline*. The numbers in Singapore, European Union (~30%)*, and the United States (24%)* may be more hopeful, but the gaps are still wide. The wide gaps indicate potentials that are untapped or lost.

Women have been key contributors in the world of engineering, science, and technology for centuries: Hypatia of Alexandria (ca. 351-415) invented the hydrometer; Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) wrote notes on the Analytical Engine that was recognized as the first algorithm to be carried out by a machine; Marie Curie (1867-1934) discovered the elements polonium and radium, and established the field of radiation therapy for cancer; Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) determined the absolute magnitude of stars, allowing astronomers to later plot their distance; and Grace Hopper (1906-1992) invented the first compiler for computer programs and popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages and the term “debugging”.

The women in this Symposium too - have been expanding the boundaries of biochemistry, molecular biology, protein science, polymer, nanotechnology, information technology, computer and defense sciences. Showcasing their achievements is an important and opportune platform for encouraging and inspiring young women in our society to embark on careers and contribute to the world by not only engaging in but also persisting in the curiosity-driven world of engineering, science, and technology.

Mon, November 13, 2017 Topical Workshop on Dark Matter
Topical Workshop on Dark Matter

One of the most intriguing problems in present-day physics, astrophysics and cosmology revolves around the nature of dark matter – the dominant form of matter in the universe. Discovered first by pioneers such as Lundmark and Zwicky in the early decades of the last century, the prominence of the dark matter problem has become more acute in recent years. Theoretical and observational evidence agree that dark matter outweighs visible matter by at least five to one, but the identity of dark matter remains a mystery even now.

This workshop will feature the most up-to-date research in this field and introduce various candidates for dark matter. The axion is one such candidate proposed by Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek, who will be at the workshop in person for discussion. The workshop will also cover the ongoing hunt for dark matter signatures at accelerators and in underground and space experiments, the verification of the existence of dark matter from studies of the cosmic microwave background, and new theoretical ideas about dark matter and dark energy paradigms.

Thu, December 15, 2016 Finding Transport Network Vulnerability by Spectral Analysis
Finding Transport Network Vulnerability by Spectral Analysis

Abstract:
Transport networks operating at or near capacity are vulnerable to disruptions. Methods for assessing network vulnerability found in the literature require origin-destination demands and path assignment. However, in real cases of transport network planning and design, demand information is often missing, out of date, partial or inaccurate. Capacity weighted spectral analysis can be used to identify potential bottlenecks in the network, without reference to demand information or path assignments. This method identifies the network cut with least capacity, taking into account the relative sizes of the sub-networks either side of the cut. Spectral analysis has the added advantage of tractability, even for large networks, as shown by applications to the Gifu Prefecture, Chicago and Philadelphia/Delaware Valley road networks.

About the Speaker:
Prof Michael Bell is the Professor of Ports and Maritime Logistics in the Institute of Transport and Logistics, at the University of Sydney Business School. Prior to this, he was for 10 years, the Professor of Transport Operations at Imperial College London and for the final 5 years at Imperial the Founding Director of the Port Operations Research and Technology Centre (PORTeC). He graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in Economics and obtained an MSc in Transportation and a PhD on Freight Distribution from Leeds University. Before arriving at Imperial College London, he worked as a Research Associate at University College London, as an Alexander von Humboldt post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, and as a Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, where he was promoted to a Readership and then a Personal Chair. His research and teaching interests span ports and maritime logistics, transport network modelling, traffic engineering, and intelligent transport systems. He is the author of many papers, a number of books (including Transportation Network Analysis, published in 1997), was for 17 years an Associate Editor of Transportation Research B, the leading transport theory journal, and is currently an Associate Editor of Transportmetrica A and Maritime Policy & Management.

Mon, March 21, 2016 4th International Workshop on Solar Energy for Sustainability
4th International Workshop on Solar Energy for Sustainability

Global bioenergetics relies on the continuous input of solar energy initiating with light-driven charge separation and water splitting reactions of photosynthesis followed by the subsequent use of the resulting high energy electrons and protons to drive the production of ATP either through photosynthetic or oxidative phosphorylation. The resulting ATP is the energy currency of biology and  powers the processes of life including the synthesis of organic molecules. These molecules are a store of chemical energy which is ultimately utilised by non-photosynthetic metabolism leading to their oxidation back to water and carbon dioxide from which they were formed.

This meeting will cover various aspects of this bioenergetic cycle to which Prof Sir John Walker (Nobel Laureate) FRS and Prof Leslie Dutton FRS have made major contributions. The cycle is initiated by the reactions of photosynthesis and the workshop will also cover the regulation of these processes in memory of the outstanding contributions made to this area of research by Professor Jan Anderson FRS who recently passed away. Therefore this workshop will bring together world leading scientists actively involved in understanding natural biological processes associated with the flow of energy in biological cells.

Chaired by Prof James Barber (Imperial College London), the distinguished speakers include Prof Sir John Walker FRS (MRC Cambridge), Prof Leslie Dutton FRS (University of Pennsylvania), Prof Rudy Marcus (Caltech) and many others.

Wed, November 04, 2015 International Workshop on Higher Spin Gauge Theories
International Workshop on Higher Spin Gauge Theories

Symmetries play a fundamental role in physics. Non-Abelian gauge symmetry is thesymmetry behind theories for massless spin-1 particles, while the reparametrization symmetry is behind Einstein's gravity theory for massless spin-2 particles. In supersymmetric theories, these particles can be connected also to massless fermionic particles.

Does Nature stop at spin-2 or can there also be massless higher spin theories? In the past strong indications have been given that such theories do not exist. However, in recent times ways to evade those constraints have been found and higher spin gauge theories have been constructed. With the advent of the AdS/CFT duality correspondence, even stronger indications have been given that higher spin gauge theories play an important role in fundamental physics. In this workshop, leading scientists in this field will discuss the latest accomplishments in this exciting field.

This workshop is organised by the Nanyang Technological University Institute of Advanced Studies, and chaired by Prof Lars Brink (former Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physics), the distinguished speakers include Misha Vasiliev (Lebedev Physical Institute), Hermann Nicolai (Albert-Einstein-Institute), Anders Bengtsson (University College of Borås) and many others.

Mon, May 25, 2015 International Conference on 60 Years of Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theories
International Conference on 60 Years of Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theories

The International Conference on 60 Years of Yang-Mills Gauge Field Theories, organised by the Nanyang Technological University Institute of Advanced Studies (NTU IAS), will be held from 25 to 28 May 2015 in Singapore.

During the last six decades, Yang-Mills theory has increasingly become the cornerstone of theoretical physics. It is seemingly the only fully consistent relativistic quantum many-body theory in four spacetime dimensions. As such it is the underlying theoretical framework for the Standard Model of Particle Physics, which has been shown to be the correct theory at the energies we now can measure. It has been investigated also from many other perspectives, and many new and unexpected features have been uncovered from this theory. In recent decades, apart from high energy physics, the theory has been actively applied in other branches of physics, such as statistical physics, condensed matter physics, nonlinear systems, etc. This makes the theory an indispensable topic for all who are involved in physics.

NTU IAS welcomes all interested faculty, researchers and students to actively participate in this exciting conference.

CENSAM Seminar - Climate Research

Speaker's Bio:

Gonzalo Carrasco joined CENSAM in 2014 after a postdoc at MIT in Ed Boyle’s group, where he studied the sources and chronology of a range of pollutant and micronutrient trace metals (including Pb, Zn, Cd, Ag, U) in coastal environments near densely-populated urban areas in the Arabian Gulf, Brazil, and the Gulf of Maine. He was also working on extending the directions of his PhD work on temporal decay of Zn complexing ligands along global ocean water masses in the North Atlantic and North Pacific.

For his MS and PhD in Oceanography (Old Dominion University, 2007 and 2010) he studied the sources, chemical speciation and bioavailability of pollutant and micronutrient trace metals Zn, Cd and Cu in natural and polluted environments in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and the Chesapeake Bay. Previously he had investigated the sources of Cr in a polluted river-soil-plant ecosystem in a major city in Peru as part of his BS in Pharmacy and Biochemistry (Universidad Catolica Santa Maria, 1994).

He has participated in international research programs including GEOTRACES, SCOR, and C-MORE. He is in the process of publishing results presented in several international conferences, and has reviewed several publications concerning trace metals and their chemical speciation.

Mon, June 23, 2014 International Conference on Physics Education and Frontier Physics
International Conference on Physics Education and Frontier Physics

The OCPA conferences began in 1995 and have become effective forums to highlight the latest breakthroughs and achievements by physicists and astronomers worldwide, especially among the ethnic Chinese physicists. It has also been an active forum to exchange information about the concurrent frontiers in physics, promote physics research and teaching, and to enhance international collaboration among ethnic and non-Chinese scientists from various parts of the world.

The 2014 conference is the 8th of the series, following successful conferences at Shantou (1995), Taipei (1997), Hong Kong (2000), Shanghai (2004), Taipei (2006), Lanzhou (2009) and Kaohsiung (2011).

Continuing the spirit of past conferences, the OCPA8 will focus on “Looking forward to Quantum Frontiers and Beyond”. A wide range of interdisciplinary topics will be discussed, including accelerator physics, astronomy and astrophysics, atomic molecular and optical physics, biophysics, chemical physics, condensed matter physics, computational physics, gravitation physics and cosmology, high energy and nuclear physics, plasma physics, quantum information science and mathematical physics, statistical and non-linear physics, and science education.

In addition, there will be roundtable discussions on regional science collaboration and science education with Nobel Laureates and distinguished scientists. There will also be a special session on Physics Education for all teachers and students, including high school students.

One highlight of OCPA8 is the OCPA-APS Outstanding Conference Poster Awards which are jointly sponsored by the American Physical Society and OCPA. We welcome all interested students and young researchers to register and submit oral or poster presentations. Wed, June 11, 2014 3rd International Workshop on Natural and Artificial Photosynthesis
3rd International Workshop on Natural and Artificial Photosynthesis

The continuous increasing demand for energy coupled with the environmental impact of atmospheric COproduced by the combustion of fossil fuels, has motivated the urgent need to explore and develop clean energy sources. Currently, the rate of energy consumption by the global population, averaged over a year, is around 16 Terawatts while the sun provides energy at an average rate of 120,000 Terawatts at the Earth’s surface. Even though solar energy is available far in excess of the needs of mankind, the challenge is to convert and store solar energy by efficient, cost effective and convenient methods. The workshop will focus on this challenge which has been at the heart of Michael Graetzel’s research for the past 40 years  and to whom this workshop is dedicated to celebrate his 70th birthday. Emphasis will be placed on the development of new generation of photovoltaic systems and also address the possibility of capturing and storing solar energy in chemical bonds to produce solar fuels. The latter is mimicking natural photosynthesis which is now understood in sufficient detail to provide a blue print for the design of artificial photoelectrochemical systems. This workshop brings together world leading scientists actively involved in understanding the natural biological processes associated with solar energy capture, storage and utilisation with those directing their efforts at creating technological systems for energy generation  using sunlight as the power source.

Mon, February 10, 2014 International conference on Flavor Physics and Mass Generation
International conference on Flavor Physics and Mass Generation

The start of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is bringing particle physics to an unprecedented TeV energy frontier, at which some long-standing questions associated with the Standard Model will be answered and new physics might be observed. In 2013 a new boson with a mass of 126 GeV was discovered. This boson might be the Higgs boson, which generates the masses of the weak bosons, or an excitation of the weak neutral boson, if the weak bosons are bound states of smaller constituents.

The implications of this discovery for the physics of quark and lepton flavors will be considered. Furthermore the following topics will be discussed:

1. Mixing of leptons and neutrino oscillations
2. Mixing of quarks and CP-violation
3. Mass generation for leptons and quarks
4. Flavor symmetries and models for quark and lepton masses
5. Mass generation in Quantum Chromodynamics
6. Flavor physics and Grand Unification
7. Heavy flavor physics and the LHC
8. Rare B-decay and new physics
9. See-saw mechanism and leptogenesis

Science, Technology & Policy

As part of the Global Young Scientist Summit @ one-north 2014, the National Research Foundation and Civil Service College are jointly organising a panel discussion on Policy and Innovation in Science and Technology.

Singapore’s society is growing ever more complex, and its economy is becoming increasingly knowledge-intensive. In this context, science and technology must be more effectively coupled with policy and governance to spur innovation, encourage economic growth and enhance public value. Singapore needs to develop the human capacity, governance frameworks and support infrastructures to enable innovation to address a growing array of economic, technical and policy challenges.

Drawing on their own experiences, the panel will discuss the relationship between scientific research, technological development, and policy design and implementation. From this discussion, you will be able to gain a better appreciation of the different approaches to the governance and development of science, technology and innovation - which together influence academia, policymaking and management.

Sat, November 23, 2013 Unveiling of EVA at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show
Unveiling of EVA at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show

TUM CREATE proudly presents:

EVA — The electric taxi for tropical megacities

The 43rd Tokyo Motor Show
Date:     23 November - 1 December 2013 [general public days]
Time:    10:00 - 20:00 [Mon-Sat] / 10:00 - 18:00 [Sun]
Booth:   Smart Mobility City Booth 8, West Hall 4
Venue:  Tokyo Big Sight [3-11-1 Ariake, Koto-ku, Tokyo]

EVA is the world’s first electric car developed from the ground up as a taxi for tropical megacities such as Singapore.

The greatest limitations of current electric vehicles are the limited range and long recharge times, making them unsuitable candidates as cabs. The engineers and researchers at have overcome these challenges by developing a revolutionary super fast charging system that can be recharged in merely 15 minutes for an autonomous range of 200 km. Efficiency is further increased by the highly effective four-zone overhead air-conditioning, as well as the use of lightweight materials throughout the car.

With energy efficient features, low noise and zero local emissions, electric taxis are able to make use of the high leveraging effect to further reduce the impact that vehicles have on the environment. In Singapore’s case, taxis make up less than 3% of the vehicular population, but account for 15% of the total distance travelled by motor vehicles annually.

EVA is a platform to showcase the research and development undertaken by over 120 scientists, designers and engineers from more than 20 countries at TUM CREATE. Other cutting edge technologies and innovations featured on this prototype are the innovative child seat, and advanced information-communication system that allows passengers to pay digitally, and control audio and climate settings, via an app on their mobile devices.

Beyond the innovations, the project also reflects the knowledge, capabilities and strong partnership between two world leading universities. TUM CREATE is a joint research institute started by Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University and Germany’s Technische Universität München, and funded by Singapore’s National Research Foundation.

Come visit our booth to get a glimpse of the future of mobility.

Mon, October 21, 2013 Dynamic architecture of Cells and Tissues
Dynamic architecture of Cells and Tissues Mechanobiology is an emerging multidisciplinary field of science, aiming at understanding the mechanisms whereby living cells sense the complex physical and chemical properties of their microenvironment and respond to it. Recent studies have demonstrated that all living organisms, from bacteria to humans, possess an amazing capacity to sense multiple features of the surrounding matrix even at the nanometer scale. The molecular composition, rigidity and micro/nanotopography, of the microenvironment trigger specific cellular responses including cell proliferation, survival, differentiation and migration.

Topics include
  • Architecture and Mechanics of Molecular Complexes
  • Mechanobiology of Bacterial Systems
  • Self-organization and Mechanics of Actin Cytoskeleton
  • Membrane Mechanics and Dynamics
  • Cell Adhesion and Collective Migration
  • The Mechanics of Developmental Systems
  • Interplay between Cell Dynamics and Signaling

Thu, October 03, 2013 Superoscillations and weak measurement
Superoscillations and weak measurement Band-limited functions can oscillate arbitrarily faster than their fastest Fourier component over arbitrarily long intervals. Where such ‘superoscillations’occur, functions are exponentially weak. In typical monochromatic optical fields, substantial fractions of the domain (one-third in two dimensions) are superoscillatory. Superoscillations have implications for signal processing, and raise the possibility of sub-wavelength resolution microscopy without evanescent waves. In quantum mechanics, superoscillations correspond to weak measurements, suggesting ‘weak values’ of observables (e.g photon momenta) far outside the range represented in the quantum state. A weak measurement of neutrino speed could lead to a superluminal result without violating causality, but the effect is too small to explain the speed claimed in a recent experminent.
