GYSS 2015 Closing Ceremony

President Tony Tan was the Guest-of-Honour of the GYSS 2015 closing ceremony. In his closing speech, he announced a National Science Experiment called “Step Out for Science”. Jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, National Research Foundation Singapore, the Singapore University of Technology and Design and the Singapore Science Centre, it will involve more than 250,000 students to explore pervasive sensing the Big Data technologies. He also announced NRF’s commitment to organise GYSS annually over the next five years. Read his speech

President Tony Tan presented Dr Luca Giancardo, the winner of Singapore Challenge 2015, with the SG Challenge medallion. Dr Giancardo is a research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his project was the neuroQWERTY software system which measures with millisecond precision the “press and release” of one’s finger on a keypad on laptops, mobile phones and tablets when the subject is typing. Dr Giancardo proposes to study individuals at high risk of Parkinson’s disease to detect subtle motor decline correlated to the disease. Read his project here
